Creating New Year’s resolutions, and sticking to them, can be difficult. It is all about utilizing resources, stepping into new situations, and finding support. Resolutions can make you a better person, improve your grades, and help you give back to the community. Here are ten resolutions you can focus on this year:
- Volunteer in the community- The Community Engagement Center offers many opportunities throughout the year for students to volunteer, many of which occur on a weekly basis. The center sends out a weekly service email where students can find the latest service opportunities.
- Have more school spirit- An easy way to show your school spirit is by participating in Red Fridays. You can also attend weekly events hosted by organizations such as 91ɬÂþSA, or cheer on your favorite athletes at .
- Go on trips- Every semester there are multiple trips that students can go on. 91ɬÂþ Outdoors offers different adventures, ranging from rock climbing to caving to snowshoeing. Trip expenses are included in your student fees so take advantage of the over 50 different trips and adventures. For the political junkies, the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service offers overnight trips to the State Capitol during the legislative session. There are also Alternative Breaks from the Community Engagement Center for students to go on during Spring Break, or study abroad opportunities through the Office of Learning Abroad.
- Meet new people- Join one of the on campus or start your own club. Clubs range from video games to rugby, giving opportunities for everyone. Clubs are a great way to look forward to something every week, meet new people, and try something new.
- Read more- This year, try stepping away from the textbooks to read a medley of other books. Groups like the President’s Book Club meet monthly to discuss the book of the month. Take the time to learn outside of required readings and jump into the books you have always wanted to read.
- Get active- If you are looking to swim, play racquetball, go rock climbing, or participate in other games, the J.L. Sorenson PE Building offers free open recreation to students. The Outdoor Center also provides cheap rentals for students to get out and stay active.
- Dive into the arts- Attend productions put on by students in the College of Performing and Visual Arts, including: theatre arts, dance, music concerts, and art galleries. You can also walk through exhibits at the Southern Utah Museum of Art. Everything is free to students, faculty, and staff with a valid ID.
- Find an internship- Finding an internship for the summer can be the best way to continue your education while you are not in class. Organizations like the Leavitt Center, IIC, and the Career Center can help find an internship that is right for you.
- Brush up on your study skills- The Gerald R. Sherratt Library gives students access to 350,000 books and 13 study rooms. The Student Success Tutoring and Study Lab has tutors available 60 hours a week, specializing in 18 different subjects. Use the resources to stay ahead in your classes this spring.
- Prepare for next year- If you are continuing your education, visit your Student Success Advisor to make sure you are on track to graduate.
