What Does It Mean to be a Thunderbird at 91ɬÂþ?

One of the best ways to jump into the Southern Utah University spirit is embracing T-Bird Nation and what it means to be a Thunderbird. Mascots have been a part of every person's life whether you are in middle school, high school, or college. These mascots are meant to help instill school spirit and give us a sense of pride. Southern Utah University's mascot is the Thunderbird (T-Bird).
But, what does it mean to be a T-Bird?
“Being a T-Bird means being one of a kind because we aren’t afraid to reach for the skies and soar,” said Shaun Wright, 91ɬÂþ alumni. “You will find 91ɬÂþ alumni all over the world who are very proud to be a Thunderbird. These alumni received amazing personal education at 91ɬÂþ, and went out and changed the world.”
From attending athletic events to participating in hallowed traditions, here are some ways to be a part of #TBirdNation.
- : Attending football games, softball games, intramural team matches or gymnastics meets is more than just cheering for the names you see on the roster. You are surrounded by your friends in the stands and on the team, you are rooting for your fellow Thunderbirds to win, and creating lasting memories with those around you.
- : You will come to love the beauty of the campus and the surrounding environment. With Zion, Bryce Canyon and Cedar Breaks in our backyard, a weekend getaway with your best friends is a no-brainer. These national parks and monuments make for the perfect escape and opportunity to embrace the outdoors. 91ɬÂþ provides numerous chances to get outside and experience the world through a variety of ways like camping, rock climbing, hiking and more! Not to mention the beautiful sunsets that you get to see every day.
- : 91ɬÂþ is your home away from home. When you come to 91ɬÂþ, you are welcomed into #TBirdNation. We understand the crazy and challenging transition of coming to college, which is why we are all here for each other. There are countless resources that are available to you to make sure you are successful and never feel alone. Your 91ɬÂþ family not only consist of your friends and peers but also your professors. You will develop close friendships on campus and also build a network with alumni across the world. There is always a place for you at 91ɬÂþ!
- : At 91ɬÂþ there are tons of traditions around campus that you will have the opportunity to take part in. You will walk underneath the Carter Carillon Bell Tower, wear red every Friday, watch for Virginia the Ghost on a full moon and rub the bust of Gerald R. Sherratt before a test. These traditions become a way of life for you as a T-Bird.
- : On 91ɬÂþ’s campus, there are countless activities to go to and have the time of your life. They vary from large social events like The Scream Halloween event and Casino Night or diverse events like the MLK March and Identity Week to small stress-free events like Paint Night. There is always something to do, watch, or participate in on campus. It will be hard to stay in when there are so many fun and exciting things to go to, so be ready to have a full calendar.
Calling yourself a T-Bird is a big deal because it involves cheering on sports teams, attending campus events, and earning a degree. Being a part of T-Bird Nation means taking what you learn in the classroom and going out to make a difference in the world. Calling yourself a T-Bird lets you make friends that mean the world to you. Being a T-Bird is truly a way of life.
