Packing the essentials for back country or day hikes is always a good idea. Each item won't be used every time, but they will be appreciated most in times of need. The original ten essentials list was assembled in the 1930s by The Mountaineers, a Seattle-based organization for climbers and outdoor adventurers to help people prepare for outdoor emergency situations.
Here is an updated list of the ten outdoor essentials:
- Navigation - map, compass, GPS
- Sun Protection - sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat
- Insulation - wool socks, warm hat, fleece/down jacket, rain coat
- Illumination - headlamp, flashlight, lantern, spare batteries
- First Aid - bandages, Aspirin, first aid kit
- Fire - lighter, matches, flint and steel, tinder
- Repair - multi-tool, duct tape, field repair kit
- Nutrition - trail mix, beef jerky, protein bar
- Hydration - water bottle, water filter, water treatment tablets
- Emergency shelter - tent, emergency blanket, tarp, bivy sack
