Attending college can be an overwhelming process, and financial obstacles are a reality that many students face. The Financial Wellness team at Southern Utah University is dedicated to promoting a culture of financial well-being by providing students and families with the financial tools needed to succeed during their academic years and beyond. They take pride in helping others to understand their financial options and to establish life skills on a personalized level.
Financial Wellness has expanded its staff and services to support students in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to manage their financial decision making via financial wellness programming. New staff members include Jayson Matlock, who works with prospective T-Birds before they arrive on campus, and Ashleigh Zimmerman, who works with current students.
Together they offer one-on-one financial coaching where students can receive help in making and sticking to a budget, understanding the pros and cons of student loans, and support in paying off credit card debt. Sessions assist students individually, as couples, and sometimes include students’ parents in order to best build healthy money habits.
In addition to one-on-one counseling, staff members also host a wide variety of events designed to equip students with strong financial skills and encourage students curiosity and openness to conversations about money. An additional resource included in the program are peer-mentors trained by financial wellness staff to share their perspectives and financial learning with their fellow students.
“It is amazing to see the improvement in students lives from financial wellness appointments,” said Maggie Bradford, peer advisor. “Their stress transforms into relief right in front of my eyes.”
