President Wyatt’s Summer Reading Club Books

President Wyatt's 2020 Summer Book Club ListSouthern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt is excited to lead the third annual “Summer Reading Club.” Each summer, everyone is invited to read along and tune into the Solutions for Higher Education Podcast for a discussion with President Wyatt, host Steve Meredith, and other exciting guests.

“We've put together an interesting collection of books that we hope are all relevant to the time that we're in,” said President Wyatt. “Some of the books are new, some are old, some are really deeply thoughtful and some are just fun. But, we think that it's going to be a good group of books.”

The months of May, June, July, and August will each feature a new book. At the end of each month, Meredith and President Wyatt will discuss the book on the podcast with a guest. This year, three of the four guests will be the authors of the books on the reading list.

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Podcast will air May 26th
Published in 2006, is psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir about his experiences with the Nazi death camps, and his pursuit to find meaning.
 
The Pacific Alone: The Untold Story of Kayaking’s Boldest Voyage by Dave Shivley
Podcast will air June 29th
is all about Ed Gillet’s solo kayak crossing from California to Hawaii in the summer of 1987. This book won the 2019 National Outdoor Book Award for Outdoor Literature.
 
The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History by John Barry
Podcast will air July 27th
is about the deadly 1918 Spanish influenza- a virus that “killed more people in twenty-four months than AIDS killed in twenty-four years.”
 
The Poker Bride: The First Chinese in the Wild West by Chris Corbett
Podcast will air August 31st
is a story about Chinese immigrant Polly Bemis, taking place during the California gold rush. Bemis' story was also captured in the 1991 film, Thousand Pieces of Gold.
