What can I do with a degree in biology? When deciding on a college major, it is important to consider your interests. What do you enjoy studying? What subjects capture your attention? What fascinates you? Even the smallest interest, like insects for example, could lead to an engaging career.

If your interests lie in living things like plants, animals or the human body, you might consider majoring in biology. A common misconception about biology is that it is only a subject for pre-med students. However, Southern Utah University’s Biology Department prepares students to pursue careers in a variety of areas including botany, forensic science, biology education, and zoology.

Botany

Botany, the scientific study of plants, is used in various careers from field botanists to plant geneticists. If the prospect of breeding plants, discovering new growing techniques or extracting plant products to be used in manufactured goods sounds exciting, then botany is for you.

Forensic Science

Forensic biologists examine biological evidence found at crime scenes to help law enforcement identify both victims and criminals. Evidence samples could include bodily fluids like blood, or insects and plants found at crime scenes.

Education

If you find biology interesting and you enjoy working with children then biology education might be the right career for you. At 91ɬÂþ, the College of Science and Engineering partners with the College of Education and Human Development to prepare graduates to enter the classroom as first-rate educators.

Zoology

The scientific study of animal anatomy, behavior and physiology is referred to as zoology. The field of zoology includes a diverse range of career opportunities. Most get their undergraduate degrees in biology or zoology and specialize in a specific group of the animal kingdom such as mammals or reptiles. Responsibilities of a zoologist often include analyzing data, promoting wildlife conservation, researching and caring for animals.

Research

Biology research has the widest range of careers as it can include scientific investigation within any biology concentration from ecosystems to the human body. Research positions are most commonly found within the medical and life sciences, and often require specific qualifications in addition to a degree in biology.

Environmental Conservation

Many biologists help solve environmental problems and preserve ecosystems. Some environmental conservation jobs that are possible with a degree in biology include marine biologists, environmental managers, conservation biologists and ecologists.

Because of 91ɬÂþ’s small class sizes, students in the Biology Department have opportunities to work closely with their biology instructors on research projects, assignments and field trips to the major ecoregions located within driving distance of 91ɬÂþ. This combination of coursework and experiential learning prepares students for post-baccalaureate pursuits and fulfilling careers.
