Have you been thinking about getting a master’s degree, but not sure if you want to bite the bullet? There are definitely pros and cons to obtaining a master’s degree. A clear pro of obtaining a master’s degree is the knowledge and education gained. On the other hand, one of the main cons is, of course, the cost. However, here at Southern Utah University, we believe that the pros outweigh the cons.
Here are five ways a master’s degree can set you apart:
1. The Network You’ll Gain
Getting a master’s degree isn’t just about that piece of paper at the end. It’s also about the people you meet during your journey. Building a network can open new doors in a career and help you advance to new places.
2. The Specialized Knowledge You’ll Acquire
Even though you will most likely specialize for your bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree will allow you to take that knowledge a step further. Graduates are able to delve into specific topics in their chosen field and perhaps discover even more areas to further explore.
3. The Experience You’ll Attain
A master’s degree allows you to specialize, so you’ll have more time to gain hands-on experiences which will both help you in your current career, and serve as resume builders to aid you in your search for a new career.
4. The Soft Skills You’ll Build
When considering earning a master’s degree, the soft skills obtained are not the first thing to come to mind on the list of benefits gained. However, a master’s degree graduates have better leadership, critical thinking, and decision making skills.
5. The Credibility You’ll Achieve
In an article published by The Hill, the Census Bureau released a study stating that 33.4% of people living in the U.S. had bachelor’s degrees compared to 13.1% with master’s degrees. A master’s degree will put you a step above the rest of your competition and set you apart.
