What can I do with a degree in accounting? As an undergraduate student, it can be a challenge to decide on a major and choose a career path after graduation. Sometimes, the future may seem unclear and the options available to you can be hard to find. For those thinking about graduating with a degree in accounting from Southern Utah University, there are more career options available than you might think.

Here are a few career options available for graduates with an accounting degree:

Accountant

The primary job of an accountant is to prepare and examine financial records. Accountants ensure that taxes are paid properly and on time and that a business is keeping a clean and accurate history.

Controller

Similar to an accountant, controllers are also responsible for managing financial records. Controllers are also responsible for overseeing all employees involved in payroll, inventory, accounts receivable, and accounts payable as well as anyone else who is involved in the accounting process.

Chief Financial Officer

A Chief Financial Officer, or CFO, is the senior executive responsible for managing the financial actions of a company. CFOs track financial planning and spending, as well as overseeing the capital structure of a company and determining the best way for the company to proceed financially.

Auditor

An auditor is a specialist who assesses the financial standing of a business to help offer advice as well as ensuring the financial records are being reported legally. Auditors investigate businesses to make sure their practices are honest and to help offer ways to avoid risk and to save money.

Fraud Investigator

A fraud investigator examines accusations of fraud in businesses. They review evidence, conduct interviews, analyze documents, and report their findings. Fraud investigators are then called to testify and share the results of their investigation to help determine whether allegations of fraud are true or false.

IRS Agent

IRS agents work for the Internal Revenue Services Criminal Investigative Division to enforce the tax laws of the United States. As an IRS agent, the daily routine is constantly changing. It can look like anything from performing criminal and civil audits, analyzing forensic accounting, and preparing reports, to producing search and arrest warrants, or testifying in court.
