The Southern Utah University Career and Professional Development Center is available to students and alumni to help with many different things including resumes, cover letters, career assessments, grad school preparation, networking and job search help, and so much more!
Every student should take advantage of the resources available at the Career Center, so let’s talk about how they can help with each resource.
Resume/Cover Letter Reviews
The Career Center has certified Career Advisors who can provide feedback to students about their resume to help them stand out when applying for jobs. Often, there are students that have applied to so many jobs and never even hear back from them — This may be due to the student’s resume. The Career Center team can help each student create a resume that will make them stand out (fingers crossed!). It’s super beneficial for students to visit the Career Center when they’re applying for a specific job. By doing this, it allows the Career Advisor to teach the student how to tailor their resume to the specific job description.
Now let’s chat about cover letters. Are you thinking, what in the world is a cover letter? Well, a cover letter is a great opportunity to set yourself apart from the other applicants applying for the same position as you are. A cover letter is a one-page business letter that you submit alongside your resume (not on the same document as your resume). The cover letter is what the employer will read FIRST, so you will want to engage them as quickly as possible. If you have a well constructed cover letter, it will drive the employer to your resume.
Take advantage of the Career Center team to help you stand out in your applications.
Career Assessments
To learn all about career assessments, check out this blog post which goes in depth on how the Career Center can help you learn more about yourself including what jobs might be of interest to you based on your interests and skills.
Grad School Preparation
Do you have to write a statement of intent for your specific grad school application? If you do, why don’t you visit with a Career Advisor who can help you create a solid statement? If you want help in your graduate school applications, or even with determining if grad school is a good fit for you, schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor to discuss your options.
Networking/Job Search
The number one way to land a job is through networking! Did you know that roughly 80% of jobs aren’t even posted publicly? That is because they already have someone in mind for the job, and likely networking helped with that! A couple incredible tools for networking are LinkedIn and 91ɬÂþ Connect. Be sure to utilize these resources when connecting with others. The more network you have, the better your odds of landing the job!
