The Department of Languages and Philosophy at Southern Utah University is committed in providing exceptional educational and cultural opportunities. We believe students should be exposed to the art, culture, and history of the languages they study. With these goals in mind, we supplement our language curriculum with free screenings of classic and contemporary films. These events serve as a forum for discussion among students, faculty, staff and community members. With the active support of our academic community, each film is supplemented with faculty-led discussions that help the audience expand their knowledge of world cinema.
About the Latin American and Iberian Film Festival
The Spanish Program hosts a yearly film series centered on a particular theme. At each screening, a faculty member introduces the featured film, offering essential artistic, cultural, and socio-political contexts. Each year we also select an outstanding graduating Spanish major to introduce one of the films. The selected student is mentored by one of our faculty members.
One of our primary goal is to show our academic community the diverse cinematic styles and cultures from the Spanish-speaking world. We believe in an interdisciplinary approach to the study of language, thus professors from other disciplines are also invited to present films. Upon completion of the festival, all of the showcased films are available in our departmental film library and the Gerald R. Sherratt Library.
All films are shown in their original language with English subtitles. All screenings are free and open to the general public. For more information please contact the organizer, Dr. Iliana Portaro (ilianaportaro@suu.edu).
