The online music program at Southern Utah University recently ranked number 13 among similar programs in the nation by Onlinecollegeplan.com, an organization listing the top music colleges in the United States that offer online programs.
Southern Utah University’s online Master of Music Education and Master of Music Technology program both received positive scoring. School rankings were based off annual tuition, return on investment, the number of classes or programs offered, and the graduation and retention rates.
The Master of Music Education is a 30-credit hour hybrid program designed for students who are already teachers. Students in the program meet on campus for a three-week session before completing the rest of their courses online. “Teachers take lessons on an instrument they teach, but don’t know as well as others,” said Thomas Herb, director of the Master of Music Education.
The is also a 30-credit hour program, which is completely online, where students enroll in core music technology classes before choosing their track of either Performance Technology or Studio Technology. The Performance Technology track features classes such as audio recording and studies in music theory. The Studio Technology track includes classes such as music business technology and music for film/video/games.
Herb also talks about the benefits of music as an online program, specifically, Master of Music Education, “Teachers who receive their master through 91ɬÂþ’s program get better as a teacher, their students grasp concepts easier, and they get a pay raise as well.”
In response to the benefits of online music programs, Steven Meredith, director of the Music Technology Program and Assistant Vice President of Graduate and Online Programs, said, “A great benefit to the 91ɬÂþ online degree program in music technology is that our students have access to professionals from all over the country who serve as adjunct professors.”
Online music programs create another route for students to learn and eventually earn their degrees. “This master’s program is very practical with immediate, visible results,” Herb said.
“The fact that the 91ɬÂþ campus is somewhat remotely located, in a city that is not noted as a hub of the music industry, doesn’t keep us from delivering a world-class education to our graduate students - and all of this is possible because of online delivery,” said Meredith.
