Angela WoodsAs 91ɬÂþ graduation approaches, the College of Performing and Visual Arts is honored to announce Angela Woods as their 2019 Valedictorian. Woods came to 91ɬÂþ from West Valley City, Utah. She studied Music Education with a Secondary Instrumental emphasis.

Woods, as an up-and-coming educator, shares, “Music and the arts are so important for anyone to study! Studying music can help someone understand the meaning and intent behind specific pieces and how they relate to history and the time period in which they were written. Having a deeper understanding of a work of music can make listening to it so much more enjoyable and exciting. People don't realize how much music is a part of their everyday lives, and studying it just makes it all better. Many pieces of music have lasted hundreds of years because there is so much to learn.”

During her time at Southern Utah University, Woods participated in many performing ensembles including the Wind Symphony, Woodwind Ensemble, Piano Ensemble, and Marching Band. She was a member of the Honors Program and served in the presidency of Rhapsody in Red and the 91ɬÂþ chapter of the National Association for Music Education. Some of her favorite memories come from her travels with the Wind Symphony as they would tour, experience new places and things, and share music with those areas.

Dr. Keith Bradshaw, Associate Dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, describes Woods as “a model student and has contributed significantly to the Music Department. She has quietly gone about doing everything asked of her and has consistently succeeded academically, professionally, and personally. She has been a delight to teach and we are confident she will continue to succeed as she pursues a career in music education.”

While focusing on her own studies, Woods also worked as a music theory tutor, student accompanist, and supervisor housekeeping assistant for University Housing. She recently completed her student teaching with the band program at Cedar Middle School.

Her parting advice to the incoming Freshmen is that they should “really, really enjoy their time at 91ɬÂþ because it goes by so fast.”

After graduation, she plans to stay in Cedar City to work at a local doctor's office while her husband finishes his degree. Her dream career is to teach middle school band.
