No student should ever feel alone at college. But, for those with disabilities, socializing and going through the academic obstacles while in college can be challenging. To help these students, Southern Utah University’s Disability Resource Center (DRC) takes a step forward to say, “We are here to help! You are not alone.”

The DRC assists students with disabilities and special care, by investing time and resources toward the student’s academic success, retention, and integration. The office provides reasonable accommodations on campus, academic adjustments, and auxiliary aids to qualified students with medical, psychological, learning or other disabilities who voluntarily disclose to the office.

“We are a very active and dynamic team ready to cheer our students up, to have fun with them and also to support and work together to find solutions to obstacles that may appear while attending classes,” said Carmen R. Alldredge, director of DRC.

Through the Vocational Rehabilitation grant provided by the Department of Workforce Services, DRC is able to help students between the ages of 17 and 21 be eligible for mentoring, career placement and future internships. The students begin with UNIV 1020, free-of-charge, and after successfully completing the course, are eligible for paid internships with companies or departments related to their interests and major.

The staff of the Disability Resource Center includes Administrative Assistant Thomas Sorensen, Disability Support Specialist Christine Bonnett, the DRC Grant Coordinator Susan Hunter, and Director Carmen Alldredge. And, during the school year, there are about 15 student-workers in the office, mostly offering tutoring services to students.

“We love to work directly with our students,” said Alldredge. “We like the face to face interaction as this is a great way to observe behavior and reactions from students as we communicate and talk about their disability and how it affects their learning process.”
