Ten Summer Courses to Help Any Major

Figuring out what to do with your free time during summer can be frustrating. So why not beat the heat by knocking out a few general education credits? Southern Utah University provides many options for summer courses so that students will not only have a summer like no other, they will be able to take a few courses and work toward completing their degree sooner.
Whether you are looking to fulfill credit requirements, or just add a fun class to enjoy this summer, these ten summer courses are open to any major looking for a summer adventure at 91ɬÂþ.
Summer Courses Open to All Majors
Agricultural Science 1010 - Introduction to Agriculture and Society
This course will increase students' awareness of the significant role agriculture plays in today's society. The class will cover various areas of science, economics, politics, culture, and history in relation to agriculture and food as a source for profit and political debates. Agriculture topics are used to teach critical thinking skills and other problem-solution methodologies. Will satisfy the General Education Life Science Knowledge Area.
Biology 1010 - Introduction to Biology
This is a non-science major course in biology focused on emphasizing mechanisms of living systems and impact of biological problems on human affairs. The course is designed to foster critical thinking, problem solving and the application of scientific thinking in biology. Again, not intended for science majors. Can be taken as a co-requisite with BIOL 1015.
Nutrition and Food Sciences 1020 - Scientific Foundations of Human Nutrition
This course serves as an introduction to the science of nutrition and the relationship of food intake and health. Nutrient requirements and food selection to meet those requirements are discussed. Students evaluate their own food intake and eating behaviors and learn to be informed consumers of food and nutrition information. Covers a Life Sciences requirement.
Math 1050 - College Algebra
College Algebra explores the properties of graphs and their functions as well as allowing students to analyze mathematical models from a wide variety of fields using various technologies. Some of the basic topics covered include matrix methods, various function algorithms, sequences, series, and conic sections. This 3-credit course is an exciting way to fill the quantitative literacy core requirement and can be taken concurrently with MATH 1060 - Trigonometry in preparation for MATH 1210 - Calculus I. A MATH 1010 prerequisite is required, or an adequate test score within the last two years.
Outdoor Rec, Parks, and Tourism 1542 - Wilderness First Responder
By taking this , students will learn proper medical responses and protocol for wilderness emergencies requiring patient management while dealing with limited resources. The course can help students become more sure of themselves when responding to an emergency, and foster resourcefulness in precarious circumstances. At the end of this 3-credit course, students will have Wilderness First Responder certification as well as fulfilling elective course requirements.
Sociology 1010 - Introduction to Sociology
This course is designed to give students a foundation for all future sociological studies. Sociology is the study of human connections and institutional social behavior. Students will develop an understanding of the role of social organization on human interaction. The course introduces definitions, terms, and concepts used in sociological literature. Covers Social and Behavioral Sciences requirements.
Communication 1030 - Introduction to Social Media
This course introduces the basics of social media public relations and writing effective posts for diverse social media platforms. The course places emphasis on writing for each type of social media platform, evaluating what makes an effective post, process of creating content, creating a personal learning network, and writing a social media plan.
Theatre 1023 - Introduction to Film
A look at the –how it influences lives and how lives influence the art. Students will watch films from many different genres, offer analysis, and gain an appreciation for the many collaborative crafts involved in the filmmaking process. The material covered in the course includes, but is not limited to, analysis of sound, lighting, set, acting, etc. This 3-credit course can be used to fulfill the fine arts knowledge area requirement.
Physics 1040 - Elementary Astronomy
is a conceptual study of the night sky from the surface of the earth and will involve an overview of the solar system including; planets, comets, asteroids, and meteors, as well as offering a non-mathematical approach to the nature of the stars and stellar evolution. This 3-credit course can be used to fulfill the physical sciences knowledge area requirement , along with a co-requisite of PHYS 1045 .
Political Science 2300 - Introduction to Political Thought
is an introductory survey of key political ideas, concepts, and movements from antiquity to the 21st century. This 3-credit course can be used to fulfill the social and behavioral sciences knowledge area requirement and is offered only during odd-numbered years.
