Secondary Admission and Block Procedures

Students requesting admission to 91ɬÂþ's Secondary Education program must follow the process listed below:

Students enrolled in Secondary English Education, Art Education, and Music Education do not require a block application or admission to the program. You'll only apply for student teaching.

Deadlines for Block Applications:

  • For Spring Block: Applications must be submitted by September 30th.
  • For Fall Block: Applications must be submitted by February 16th.

To be admitted to "Block"

  1. Applicants must complete an  .

    a. In order to go into student teaching, all Secondary education students are required to first go through a series of courses (Block) that both prepares you for the classroom and gives you practical experience in a classroom setting.

    b. Secondary "Block" consists of two courses taken together, usually in the semester before student teaching. Alongside the two courses, students will be required to participate in various practicum settings.

    c. Please be aware that 91ɬÂþ does not provide out-of-state placements for Block.

  2. Applicants must have taken and passed all "General Education" requirements (30 credits)

    Policy for Transfer Students: All transfer students must have their teacher education credit hours evaluated by the College of Education Academic Advisor and Chair. Courses older than ten years will not be accepted. Some programs and endorsements may vary.

  3. 3.0 cumulative GPA required for admission. No course with a "C-" grade or below within education courses or major/minor courses is accepted for licensure. You must receive a "C" grade or higher. This includes any transfer credit. (Students must maintain a semester 3.0 GPA. A lower GPA will result in probation. After two semesters of GPA below 3.0 admission will be revoked. A formal appeal through the Department Chair is required for reinstatement).
  4. Background check/fingerprints are required. Before a teacher candidate can work in the public schools in extended practicums and clinical practice (student teaching), a criminal background check must be completed. You might be required to have your Background check completed prior to admission, as it is needed in EDUC 2200 and 2400. Please refer to the following link for detailed instructions on how to complete this step.
  5. Dispositions. are an ongoing part of the admission process in Teacher Education. They will be collected in each course and violating department, college, University, or community ethical standards will affect continued participation and/or admission into education courses and programs. Dispositions begin in pre-admission courses, and if there is an issue, a meeting will be set up with the professor and department chair. 
  6.  Admission Survey. Students will be required to take a quick . This survey is used to help us determine where students feel their level of knowledge about key teaching standards falls at the beginning of the program and then at the end.

Finalizing admission to Teacher Education. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure all components of the admission process are complete.

NOTE: All Secondary Education Students will need to successfully complete the PLP (Professional Learning Plan) during their student teaching semester before they will be recommended for licensure.This will be accomplished by registering for EDUC 4930 and SCED 4980. This assessment will replace the teacher work sample and students will be prepared during courses and required class workshops.
