Maintaining Status for Visa

Termination/Reinstatement

While in studying in the United States on a J or F visa, students need to pay close attention to the expiration dates of their documents as well as to the requirements they have to meet in order to maintain their status. A general rule of thumb is an individual on a student visa is only authorized to engage in activities that are associated with the purposes of their visa type, namely being a student.

It is good practice for students to read and understand the second page of their I-20/DS-2019. This document outlines the terms and conditions that affect the students’ stay in the United States. Once read and understood, students should sign the bottom of the first page of their I-20/DS-2019.

Status violations will result in the termination of the student’s I-20.
