TRiO SSS Services Offered

As a participant of 91ɬÂþ Student Support Services program you are eligible to utilize the following services;

TRiO Lab

The TRiO SSS lab is located in the Sharwan Smith Center, upper level rotunda, inside the Student Support Center. This place is our home away from home.

Here is all it is used for:

  • Tutoring services
  • Mentor meetings
  • Computer use
  • Printing
  • Study lounge

Tutoring and Mentorship Programs

Tutoring services provide tutorial support Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 6PM, with assistance offered in Math, English, Sciences, etc. The tutor's schedules and subjects are posted on the bulletin board in the lab. The lab is closed when classes are not in session (ie. weekends, breaks, holidays).

Our peer mentors spend most of their time connecting with their students when they are working in the lab. Skip the zoom meeting and instead join them in person. Our mentors have a cohort of less than 50 students allowing them to make worthwhile connections with their mentees.

Each participant is assigned a mentor. The mentor is a student worker who stays in contact with assigned participants by answering questions and concerns. They also refer participants to the appropriate resource for help if needed. Mentors call, write and/or meet regularly with their participants.

Academic Advising

Student Support Services participants will receive one-on-one advisement designed to help you succeed in your courses and graduate with your degree within an efficient time frame. How do we do this? You will meet with your SSS advisor each semester to receive supplemental support to your academic advisor.

Below is a general idea of some things that you can do in your meetings with your SSS advisor:

  • Investigate possible majors and careers;
  • Learn study strategies to help you to be a successful student;
  • Get connected to resources and services on and off campus; and
  • Track your progress towards graduation

Book Loan Library

Student Support Services participants may request textbooks to borrow for a semester. If we do not have it in our current library we may be able to purchase it for participants to borrow. Priority will be given to math and science textbooks as those are used for more than one semester for each course. To request books please fill out this .

Major/Career Assistance

Assistance is available to help students identify resources available to choose a major and make career decisions considering their interests, talents and resources. For further help go to the 91ɬÂþ Career Services site.

Financial Assistance

: The U.S. Department of Education/TRIO Programs has established a fund to enhance retention by providing supplemental financial aid for low-income students enrolled in Student Support Services at Southern Utah University. Freshman and sophomore students with high financial need will be given priority. Applications will be reviewed by the TRiO team.
